10/26/19 Week 6 Response to Personal Space Differences
I'm writing two blog posts in one day!! What!? I am just super excited to share more about today's post.
Personal Space Differences
Do you mind when people interrupt your personal space? How about borrowing one of your personal belongings? The answers may vary differently according to other cultures.
In my opinion, I don't really mind if someone is in my personal space. As long as they are clean, and someone I am related to. So, strangers are definitely not allowed near my personal space! Also, if someone borrows my clothes, I hope they bring them back nice and neat. That's all I request.
I have two sisters and we are all the same size. I grew up sharing clothes with them! It was not at all a problem since we all shared clothes and politely brought them back to each other. If someone didn't do what was required to do after borrowing, they would be informed! (by informed I mean usually yelled at). Here is a picture of my sisters and my mom just for fun!
Yes, we are all basically the same size and style, so it was beneficial to all of us borrowing each other's clothes. You can tell by this picture, we don't really have a personal space issue. We are all close together and that is how we are naturally. It is interesting how there are differences in other families or cultures. This might not be the case in your home, or in other places across the globe. But, it is interesting to talk about.
In the country of Germany, they see personal space differently. "To the Germans, they see personal space as sacred. In WWII, German POWs took materials and made their own separate living compartments within stockades. Germans insist on the privacy of their yards and houses. In Berlin, after the war, when Germans were required by the American occupiers to share their kitchens and bathrooms, the Germans were killing each other due to the stress of having their space invaded."(Professor Ivers, BYU-Idaho).
While I was on my mission in Uruguay, I had to take a bus or walk to all of the appointments. It was a little exhausting at first. But, I soon adapted to it. On the buses sometimes they were so crowded that we were up close to a random stranger. Meanwhile, it is hot and humid on the buses so that was also very bothersome for me. Since then, I have thought about personal space more, in other countries. I think people tend to have different opinions on their personal space. Check out this video of some people in Japan loading on a subway.
Do you think they care about their personal space? Why or why not? Comment down below so we can discuss it together!
